In this post, we’d like to share the newest development in our partnership with Google, as well as a recap of the progress we’ve made together and the breadth of Google Cloud Platform technologies that Cube Cloud natively integrates with. 

## Perform Live Queries on Any Modeled Data in Google Sheets

Today, we are launching Cube Cloud for Sheets, a Google Sheets Add-on, enabling users to connect to and reuse trusted data assets and perform live queries on governed data. Spreadsheets remain a common entry point for users of all levels of technical expertise engaging with analytics and we’re excited to enable them to solve their data challenges with the tool they are most comfortable with. 

With this add-on users can access data from any Cube Cloud supported data source and perform multidimensional analysis with pivot table functionality. Cube Cloud for Sheets expands data source connectivity in Google Sheets beyond its default capabilities of BigQuery and Looker. Adding filters, columns, rows and measures is easy with an intuitive user interface provided in a Google Sheets sidebar. 

This integration eliminates the need for pre-processing, ensures real-time data access, and streamlines complex data transformations, allowing analysts to focus on deriving insights. The feature is available to Cube Cloud accounts of the Premium tier or higher, and it can be found in the [Google Workspace Marketplace](https://workspace.google.com/marketplace/app/cube_cloud_for_sheets/641460343379 "Install the Google Sheets Add-on").

## Cube Cloud Now Available on the Google Cloud Marketplace

Cube Cloud has been available on GCP in many regions around the world since the early days of the company, but recently we took the next step in partnership and listed Cube Cloud in the Google Cloud Marketplace. Purchasing software via cloud marketplaces has many well known benefits, such as speedier procurement, consolidated billing, simplified EULA terms, and accessing existing committed spend. ## Connect Cube Cloud to Data and Analytics Services on Google Cloud Platform

In addition to flexible purchasing and infrastructure support, Cube Cloud also deeply integrates with many data and analytics services on Google Cloud Platform.

BigQuery, the Google cloud data warehouse, is the 3rd most common data source that customers of Cube Cloud use. They are great compliments for each other. In fact we use BigQuery and Cube Cloud for our own internal analytics infrastructure here at Cube. 

Customers frequently pair Cube and BigQuery to bring stronger governance, metric and semantic consolidation and improved performance to their internal business intelligence initiatives. For those of a lakehouse persuasion, Cube supports connectivity to Dataproc, for managed SparkSQL, Presto and Trino.

Cube also supports many of the different relational database engines within GCP, such as all flavors of Google Cloud SQL, including Postgres, MySQL and SQL Server engines. We also support AlloyDB as a data source. Our customers frequently combine these technologies to enable embedded analytics, customer facing dashboards, or AI use cases without impacting performance of an operational product database by pre-aggregating data in Cube Store and serving applications from our API endpoints with caching.

Embedded analytics transforms where and how data is used for decision-making, allowing you to integrate data visualization, reporting, and analytical capabilities directly into applications. In this blog, we’ll examine the different ways to create seamless embedded experiences that cater to different business and technical requirements.

## Hosted Reports
Even a small business using a simple accounting package expects to have reports of some kind available in the application. As consumers, we have similar reports available in credit card statements or utility bills: the principal is the same. These reports may be hosted on a separate page or tab of the application. Today, they are increasingly graphical and have simple capabilities such as sorting and filtering: not quite analytic, but not merely static printouts either. 

In the enterprise, a key benefit of embedding a reporting platform is simply consistency across the organization. For users who work with business reports in other contexts, such as managers, the embedded versions will appear familiar and easy to navigate. Nevertheless, canned reports offer very limited insight: convenient and easy for sure, but that’s about it.

## Business Intelligence Applications
There are now many BI applications on the market ranging from simple visualization tools to complete analytics packages with statistics, predictive analytics, and AI augmentation. Many of these tools have some facility for embedded, with some important differences depending on their architecture. In general, the key components of an embedded solution are the embedded presentation layer, the analytics engine, and the data sources.

Each of these can be developed and deployed independently, but in some approaches your architectural choices will appear limited. Especially in the most sophisticated packages, the analytics engine may be tightly coupled with the presentation layer as a legacy of an older architecture.

There are some advantages to embedding BI applications, especially for organizations with IT-provisioned BI already widely deployed: familiarity and ease of use due to existing user proficiency with the BI system, dynamic and interactive analytics capabilities, and consistent data reporting across the organization. Centralized management might also simplify governance and compliance.

This approach may also look cost-effective in theory, leveraging existing investments rather than requiring new development, but in practice the cost advantage is limited because the embedded solution will involve both new work and new deployment.  Licensing is rarely the most significant cost in any system.

Within this approach, there are numerous options for embedding, including the following:
- __IFrame Embedding:__ This is one of the simplest ways to integrate analytics into an application. It involves embedding an analytics dashboard or report within an inline frame (iframe) on a webpage or application. Developers find this method relatively easy to implement as it doesn't require extensive coding or deep integration with the application's infrastructure. But the main limitation is that iframes remain somewhat inflexible. They often only provide a "window" into a separate system, which does not provide the best user experience or good interactivity with the host application.
- __API-Based Integration:__ Another approach is to use APIs to integrate analytics directly into the application. The analytics platform exposes APIs to allow the operational application to request and receive data and visualizations. In particular you may develop a look-and-feel which is more integrated with the workflow of the host application. But of course, this requires technical expertise and development effort. The integration needs to be maintained as both the analytics tool and the operational application evolve. It’s also worth noting that not all BI platforms have good APIs. Some of your favorite features in the platform may not be well supported, if at all.
- __White-Labeling:__ This approach involves rebranding an existing analytics solution while shipping it with the host application. The embedding may use one of the techniques described above, or the applications may just sit side-by-side. White labeling offers a way to provide analytics services under the host application's branding. It's also useful for software vendors wanting to offer analytics as part of their own product suite.
- __Embedded BI Platforms:__ Some BI platforms have been designed from the ground up to be integrated into other applications. These platforms provide comprehensive analytics capabilities, including data visualization, reporting, and dashboards which can be embedded with sophisticated tools for integrating both workflow and look-and-feel. 

## Embeddable Analytic Libraries 
Pre-built, reusable components can provide developers with an efficient way to build analytic features into operational applications without the need to code common features from scratch. Analytics libraries may include data visualizations, predefined metrics, predictive models, interactive tables, report formats and many other useful objects. These libraries facilitate rapid development and deployment, thanks to their pre-built, ready-to-integrate components.

Most importantly component libraries enable the most complete integration of operational and analytic workflows. However, unlike a complete BI platform, component libraries may not have their own analytic or semantic engine. This may sound like a significant disadvantage, but in practice it affords some new opportunities.

Remember first that the tight coupling between the analytic engine and the presentation layer is exactly what makes embedding BI platforms so frustrating for developers. Also, the analytics engine of a classic BI platform may exceed the simpler requirements of an embedded scenario. Fortunately there is another approach. A headless analytic engine, such as a universal semantic layer, decouples the presentation layer from the analytic logic and data engineering.  

## AI-Powered Chatbots
Perhaps the most modern and user-friendly way to embed insights in an application is through a chatbot. These friendly interfaces used to be limited in functionality because of the difficulty in translating from natural language to data, finding the relevant answers in a knowledge base, and then delivering the details back in natural language again.

However, with the availability of ChatGPT in 2023, the experience of chatbots has changed forever. Now we can reasonably expect to interact with natural language and get back genuinely relevant insights which may be in natural language, or with multi-modal AI, may be new datasets or visualizations. 

The challenge for developers embedding an AI chatbot is not the user experience, but rather ensuring that the Large Language Model (LLM) driving the bot has access to the relevant data and context for the business. But developers also need to constrain the LLM to give only the relevant answers and detail. Prompt-engineering can help, but it’s not enough. The universal semantic layer  provides the LLM with a model of a world, composed of entities and their measures and dimensions. It’s a powerful way of enabling a chatbot experience that is usable, relevant, and accurate.

## Best Practices for Successful Integration
The universal semantic layer provides a flexible foundation for embedded analytics, supporting an open, composable, scalable, and secure architecture for your application, built to your specific requirements. To successfully integrate embedded analytics using the universal semantic layer, consider the following best practices:
- __Define Clear Objectives:__ Choose your approach. Identify the specific goals you aim to achieve with embedded analytics, such as improving user engagement, providing personalized insights, or enhancing decision-making capabilities.
- __Focus on User Experience:__ Design the embedded analytics features with the end-user in mind. Ensure that the insights are easy to access, understand, and act upon. Use interactive visualizations to enhance engagement and usability.
- __Unify Data Models:__ Combine data from various sources into a single, cohesive data model. Provide access to consistent, high-quality data, regardless of its origin so that users can trust the insights they receive, knowing they are based on comprehensive and accurate information.
- __Enforce Data Access Controls:__ Implement robust data governance practices to maintain high data security, privacy, and quality. Enforce data access controls in the context of the current user or role, delivering analytics based on secure data.
- __Optimize for Performance:__ Leverage query optimization and caching features of the universal semantic layer to ensure fast and responsive analytics. Regularly monitor performance and make adjustments as needed to maintain a seamless user experience.
- __Plan for Scalability:__ Plan for future growth by leveraging the scalable architecture of the universal semantic layer. Ensure that your solution can handle increased data volumes and user demands without degradation in performance.

Generated code will use the [REST API](https://cube.dev/docs/product/apis-integrations/rest-api) and the [JavaScript SDK](https://cube.dev/docs/reference/frontend/cubejs-client-react) to fetch the data and feed it into the charting code. It’s almost a bit painful to imagine a process in which we’d need to run reports manually, download them menially, and only _then_ analyze data in a third-party tool. Therefore, many companies and organizations are turning to embedded analytics to give their internal and external users great data experiences. And that begs the question: what _are_ the components of a great embedded analytics tools stack?

## What are the components of a _great_ embedded analytics tools stack?

In the olden days—approximately 2.38 years ago—an embedded analytics tools stack began with the data source and ended with the presentation layer (with nothing else in there).  

No longer. 

The components of a _good_ modern embedded analytics stack are:

But regardless, Databricks is a powerful tool for organizations seeking efficient data analysis and machine learning solutions.

#### Fast Analytics Databases

Fast analytics databases are high-performance data storage systems optimized for quick processing of large volumes of data. They leverage advanced indexing techniques, parallel processing, and in-memory computing to deliver rapid data retrieval and analysis. These databases enable organizations to gain valuable insights and make real-time data-driven decisions.

Take, for instance, **[ClickHouse](https://clickhouse.com/)**: an open-source columnar DB management system designed for high-performance analytics. It excels at executing ad-hoc queries on large data volumes with blazing-fast speeds. ClickHouse is scalable, handles petabytes of data, and supports real-time processing for time series, log, and clickstream analysis. And so, while it does have a steeper learning curve and is optimized for read-heavy workloads, it's a powerful tool for complex analytics and data-driven insights.

Another option in the fast analytics database world is **[Druid](https://druid.apache.org/)**, an open-source columnar store designed for real-time, high-performance analytics. It's optimized for sub-second queries and handling large data volumes, making it ideal for interactive analysis, flexible data modeling, and scalability. Druid offers fast data ingestion and query response times, enabling real-time analysis of streaming and historical data. Being a specialized and complex tool, it's more suited for advanced users and specific scenarios because, as a distributed system, careful configuration and architectural considerations are needed for optimal performance.

### 2. Embedded Analytics Tools: Semantic Layer

A semantic layer is a middleware that sits between your data source and your presentation layers. It helps you manage all of the information you feed into every downstream data app in your stack. And it’s critical for building embedded analytics.  

Incorporating a semantic layer into your embedded analytics stack means you’re able to efficiently build native applications and ensure that the data that’s in them is consistent, secure, and fast.

### 3. Embedded Analytics Tools: Presentation Layers

#### For internal-facing embedded analytics:

*Traditional BI*

Let’s start with what we’ll call “Traditional BI” software. These platforms have been around for a while and, with their long tenure, have become the dominant players in the space. Again, we’ll preface this rundown with a disclaimer that this is _not_ a complete list. 

Traditional BIs are often popular with later-stage companies that have already defined their data needs. Ergo, rather than needing tools for *data exploration* (more on those later), these data consumers know what questions they need to ask every day; they just need set dashboards with which to continuously monitor the answers (or metrics, KPIs, etc.)  

So, in one corner, we have **[Tableau](https://www.tableau.com/)**: an established, heavy-weight player in the game. I say ‘heavy-weight’ because it enables analytics with a very large feature set—and, therefore, plenty of analytical flexibility. Tableau’s substantial feature set allows for comprehensive analytics, which makes it a great tool for technically skilled analysts. 

In another corner, we have **Microsoft Power BI**, which is similar to Tableau in its popularity for building internal dashboards—but is possibly even more ubiquitous due to its frequent packaging with other Microsoft Office products. This bundling can make Power BI more cost-accessible than Tableau, although it does have tiered features and capabilities that gate advanced analytics features.

Lastly (although *absolutely* not least), we have **[Thoughtspot](https://www.thoughtspot.com/)**. Thoughtspot is a BI platform that, like Power BI and Tableau, offers data visualization. However, it differs in its *search-based* analytics. Meaning you can query it in natural language (rather than SQL) and receive a visualization or answer. This capability helps it make analytics accessible to a much wider pool of data consumers—a company’s data practitioners _and_ general business users. 

*Interactive Notebooks*

And then there’s another category of potential embedded analytics tools for internal use cases: ‘Interactive Notebooks.’

Interactive notebooks are powerful analytics tools that allow greater flexibility than OOB, self-serve, ‘traditional’ BI. These platforms enable technical data practitioners with more advanced analytics skills to:

* Connect and query multiple data sources
* Analyze information in a flexible and collaborative environment
* Build data apps and documents that are useful to both technical and non-technical data consumers
* Efficiently distribute the artifacts to those who need them.

This class of tools is popular among early-stage companies, for which the questions stakeholders are asking aren’t yet set in historical stone. Therefore, analysts are more inclined to do *data exploration* of operational analytics to find the metrics that are important to continuously track.

Let’s talk examples.

**[Hex](https://hex.tech/)** is one of the most popular data notebooks out there. It offers streamlined connectivity to data sources and SQL- and Python-based analytics workspaces, making it a fantastic tool for data scientists or analysts to build easily shareable, interactive data apps ([here’s our rundown about it](https://cube.dev/blog/hex-integration-collaborative-data-notebooks).)

Another great notebook is **[Deepnote](https://deepnote.com/home)**, which enables and streamlines real-time collaboration of the data engineers, data scientists, and analysts on your team; consider it the “Google Docs” of data. It’s both [Jupyter](https://jupyter.org/)-compatible and runs on the cloud, making it easy to run and integrate [(here’s our take on it](https://cube.dev/blog/deepnote-tutorial-jupyter-data-notebook).)

And as a final example, we have **[Count](https://count.co/)**. Count allows data consumers to collaborate on building everything from reports and dashboards to process flows and strategic plans. And, it makes itself accessible to non-technical users by also featuring templates, drag-and-drop functionality, and low-code/no-code interfaces.

#### For customer-facing embedded analytics:

And lastly, it’s time to tackle customer-facing embedded analytics—in which flexibility to build tailor-made, native UIs reign supreme. 

There are many, many options of frameworks and libraries to choose from, but we’ll highlight a few.  

First, let’s talk about **[React](https://react.dev/)**. React is a widely-used front-end framework that offers a rich ecosystem of charting libraries like Recharts and Victory. React's component-based architecture simplifies building reusable charts and seamlessly integrates with other React-based components. React's virtual DOM also enables efficient rendering, resulting in smooth and performant data visualizations. So with all of this, it’s commonly used for building interactive UIs and single-page applications ([example](https://react-dashboard-demo.cube.dev/#/)).

There’s also **[D3.js](https://d3js.org/)**. A charting library known for its flexibility and data-driven approach, D3.js is a popular choice for building customized and advanced visualizations. It provides a low-level API that gives developers complete control over the visualization process. While it requires a steeper learning curve, D3.js empowers engineers to create highly expressive and interactive charts ([example](https://d3-dashboard-demo.cube.dev/#/)).

And finally, **[Highcharts](https://www.highcharts.com/)**—is a powerful charting library with a wide range of chart types and customization options. Highcharts provides interactive and visually appealing charts that can be seamlessly integrated into applications and offers extensive documentation and a supportive community. Because it allows for a wide range of pre-built chart types, Highcharts is ideal for quickly creating interactive charts and graphs ([example](https://highcharts-demo.cube.dev/#/)).

## Best of both worlds: flexibility and time-to-value.

The important thing to note here is that today's embedded analytics tools stack is not what it was; it’s *much* better. 

Gone are the days of having to choose between inflexible, ‘force-fit’ traditional BI or the resource drains of building custom data experiences from scratch. With a semantic layer, you can simply have both. 

You can build native embedded analytics with minimal engineering resources for development and maintenance. And, you can ensure that your internal BI dashboards—[in all 76 BI apps your company uses](https://www.forrester.com/report/Use-BI-Fabric-To-Optimize-Your-Multivendor-Business-Intelligence-Environment/RES138551)—work off the same metrics definitions, caching, and data access controls.

The Critical Components: an Example Embedded Analytics Tools Stack

Embedded analytics offers the seamless integration of rich data experiences into users' natural workflows. Let me walk you through the technical requirements of a modern embedded analytics data stack,  highlighting the role of a data warehouse-centric architecture and a robust semantic layer. The evolution towards decoupling BI from the frontend not only ensures total consistency of data across applications but also opens the door to exciting developments and cost-savings.

## What is embedded analytics?

Embedded analytics means much more than using iframes to place charts in a dashboard. The real promise of embedded analytics is to _bring rich data experiences to users where they already are_. As [Gartner][3] puts it, “data analysis occurs within a user’s natural workflow, without the need to toggle to another application.”

With embedded analytics, financial analysis can be built right into a personal finance application. Personal health metrics can be displayed alongside one’s medical history. Every member of a team can see the business’s KPIs and trends without logging into a BI tool. 

For businesses, embedded analytics affords full control over what data is available and how it’s presented. For data consumers, embedded analytics means finding useful insights within the sites or apps they already use—without toggling between unfriendly, third-party dashboards. [A Harvard Business Review study found that switching between applications costs employees time equivalent of up to five weeks a year](https://hbr.org/2022/08/how-much-time-and-energy-do-we-waste-toggling-between-applications).

At Cube, we’ve been on the front lines of embedded analytics for years. Here are some recent technological and behavioral shifts we’ve observed.

## The rise of the cloud data warehouse

In the past, collecting and processing massive data sets was so technically complex and expensive that only a few companies did so. Now, cloud data warehouses make it possible for organizations in every industry and of every size to easily and affordably collect and process more data—which is often the most uniquely competitive asset a company has. This newfound accessibility has led to the [explosion in adoption](https://www.alliedmarketresearch.com/data-warehousing-market) of cloud data warehouses.

But it's not enough to just collect lots of data. Businesses need to _use_ the data, too—which has increased the need for customizable, powerful data experiences. **As a result, companies’ adoption of cloud data warehouses has led to greater interest and investment in embedded analytics, too.**

## Data consumers are more diverse

As more and more businesses invest in embedded analytics, **there is also a quickly growing variety of data consumers**. Business intelligence was once the purview of specialized engineers and analysts—but now, every member of an organization is expected to use and understand data to perform their job.

So, who is the modern data consumer? For starters, they may be less technical. The modern data consumer [may not be familiar with data engineering concepts like OLAP][5]—and they shouldn’t have to be. Moreover, the modern data consumer may not even be familiar with legacy BI tools—and, again, they shouldn’t need to be.

In order to make data accessible and actionable for these data consumers, companies need to build customized user interfaces that move beyond mere iframed graphs. And so, to match the pace of increasing diversity in data consumers, embedded analytics applications have grown more polished and interactive. 

## Front-end development is easier

**A major change in the world of embedded analytics is the rise of modern front-end development tools**. In the past decade, there have been incredible advances in powerful, simple front-end technologies—particularly [React][7]. It’s now easier than ever to design tailored, streamlined user experiences.

This innovation hasn’t just made it easier to develop custom data experiences; it also has altered users’ expectations to make such experiences essentially mandatory. Both internal data consumers and end users have new, higher standards for usability, richness, and responsiveness.

Since these expectations can’t be met with generic dashboards or out-of-the-box BI platforms, more companies are building customizable and performant embedded analytics features using modern front-end tools.

## There are new tools

It’s become easier for front-end development teams to build highly custom native UIs, but these aren’t necessary for every project. Sometimes, standard visualizations are enough and development speed is key. 

**A new generation of collaborative data tools**, including [Hex][6], [Observable][8], and [Streamlit][9], make it possible for data analysts to quickly select the appropriate chart for a dataset and share reports both throughout a company and to end customers.

Organizations need the freedom to choose the right tool for each job—whether it’s a custom application built by front-end teams or shareable dashboards built by data teams. 

## Rethinking the data stack

So, as we think about these developments, what are the technical requirements of a modern embedded analytics data stack?

## Data warehouse-centric architecture

As [others][10] [have][11] [noticed][12], the cloud data warehouse is a place not only store and process data, but also make it interactive. To actually be a backend for data analytics applications, including embedded analytics, the data warehouse needs to be at the core of your [data stack](https://cube.dev/product/data-apis).

Having data in a single place significantly reduces operational overhead. On one end, ELT is replacing ETL, on the other end, we see a trend away from moving data into “serving” databases and towards powering applications with data directly from warehouses. This architecture is easier to orchestrate and less error-prone because it removes additional pipelines and storage layers. 

Warehouses still predominantly work with batch data, but there are a lot of recent exciting developments in supporting real-time data. [Firebolt][13], [Clickhouse][14] and [Materialize][15] are actively innovating in the space. 

Finally, this architecture also opens an opportunity for [bring-your-own-data-warehouse applications][16]. This may be beneficial for both vendors and consumers because it simplifies the security architecture and streamlines new software onboarding.

## Semantic Layer in the middle

[We’ve previously described the four essential components of a semantic layer][17]. To specifically support embedded analytics, a semantic layer solution must have these attributes:

### First-class support for cloud data warehouses

A major piece of a semantic layer is **[access control](https://cube.dev/product/data-access-control)** integrated with the data warehouse’s security controls, because embedded analytics always require multitenancy. A second piece is **[advanced caching,](https://cube.dev/product/caching-and-data-performance)** because although the data warehouse is a great candidate for a backend, it doesn't does not support high-concurrency small queries with the low latency that modern data consumers expect.

### Data modeling

Across the wide variety of new data consumers, everyone should consume the same data: “net sales” in your dashboard should mean the same thing as “net sales” in my mobile CRM. To achieve this consistency, [data modeling and defining metrics](https://cube.dev/product/data-modeling) should be handled once, and this must be up-stack from every application or dashboard.

### Diverse APIs

Different data consumers have different expectations and requirements, so it’s inevitable that a company will end up supporting a whole class of data apps. For all of these applications to share the same metrics, a [semantic layer must be accessible via multiple APIs](https://cube.dev/product/data-apis), e.g., SQL, GraphQL, and REST.

## A hybrid presentation layer

To support different data consumers, use cases, and teams, an embedded analytics presentation layer should be universally open and compatible with every frontend architecture; organizations should be able to granularly curate their stacks. 

When high customization is required and front-end teams are looped in, different charting libraries can be used, ranging from [D3][18] to [Chart.js][19] and [Highcharts][20]. These most likely will be natively integrated with frontend application frameworks like React or [Angular][21].

When requirements are less custom, tools like Observable or [Dash][23] come into the picture. These tools can be natively integrated into an app and combined with a more custom interface, while making it faster and cheaper to build tailored applications.

And on the least customizable—but lowest barrier to entry end—data analysts and engineers can quickly build appealing data interfaces with modern BI tools like [Superset][24] and [Metabase][25]. These tools don't require front-end knowledge, which usually enables even faster building and iteration. They too can be combined with other presentation layers within a single application. 

Finally, there is the emerging category of no-code/low-code tools for internal tooling. This segment includes [Appsmith][26] and [Retool][27] which can also be used to build analytics interfaces.

## Conclusion

We’ve moved far past the era when embedded analytics was considered a part of a single integrated BI solution. The latest generation of BI vendors have already innovated to run “live” queries directly on top of data warehouses, which allows for cloud data warehouse-centric architectures.

The next evolutionary step—one that’s already rapidly taking place—is decoupling  BI from the frontend. By doing so, organizations are empowered to facilitate total consistency of the same data across all data applications, as well as AI agents and chatbots.

Here’s how the embedded analytics data stack has changed.

The Modern Data Stack for Embedded Analytics

These days, customer-facing analytics are everywhere. 

We are, after all, in The Data Age—hence why you’re reading this blog and why we’re writing it. And because of the ubiquity of data, as consumers, we’ve become extraordinarily curious; we want to know everything about our businesses, investments, and lap times. 

Consumers are pining for insights—presented in fast-loading, beautifully customized dashboards. And so, many companies are turning to embedded analytics with [Tableau](https://www.tableau.com/). 

But as more consumers demand analytics, raising the standards of UI customization, interactivity, and speed, what if there were a more tailored, more performant way to give users the insights they need?

Well, there is: embedded analytics with Tableau and [Cube](https://cube.dev/). Let’s explain. 

## What is Embedded Analytics?

Simply put, [embedded analytics](https://cube.dev/blog/what-is-embedded-analytics) is the practice of integrating data analytics and visualization capabilities with a user’s natural workflow, such as their web portals, internal tools, or applications. 

For example: with embedded analytics, rather than needing to export sales data from their e-commerce platform and then conduct analysis separately in Excel, a seller could derive insights from dashboards and reports available to them directly within their commerce portal. 

Of course, embedded analytics __can be used in internal- and external-facing applications to provide real-time static and interactive reports, dashboards, and data visualizations__. 

There are many benefits of using embedded analytics. First, it can __save the user time and effort__ and add a lot of value. In turn, this saved time and gleaned insights __contribute to a user-centric UX that drives adoption__—even among those who aren’t as analytics-experienced. And higher adoption means a __better ROI on internal tooling__ and an __increase in revenue for external tooling__. 

## Embedded Analytics with Tableau

So, why do so many companies turn to [embedded analytics with Tableau](https://www.tableau.com/products/embedded-analytics)?

Tableau is one of the leading platforms for data visualization and dashboarding. It's based on its own VizQL, which expresses data visually by translating drag-and-drop actions into data queries. 

This drag-and-drop capability makes data analytics and business intelligence accessible to a much wider pool of people—which is a great thing. Clearly, given its smashing success, Tableau met a hot demand for data democratization and did it well. 

*However*, things get a little more hinky when it comes to the [embedded analytics stack](https://cube.dev/blog/modern-embedded-analytics). This is because users not only use Tableau for analytics within Tableau itself but also use it to power embedded analytics within other applications. 

The problem is that __having your embedded analytics with Tableau sit directly on top of your data warehouse comes with a few shortcomings__, such as:

1. Difficulty with customizability and designing user-centric UIs

2. Duplicated effort and opportunities for inconsistency when creating multiple sets of data definitions and security contexts

3. Weaker analytics performance

### 1) Difficulty with customizability and designing user-centric UIs
Tableau has many visualization layer options, but it just doesn’t have one for every audience or use case. You can undoubtedly brand the Tableau visualizations embedded in your app; however, there are restrictions on what you can build with the visualization layers Tableau offers (e.g., extremely use-case-specific drill-downs).

And so, __Tableau’s visualization templates may work just fine for 80% of your applications, but those that truly need a highly tailored, custom UI will require you to build a custom presentation layer from scratch__. 

The problem is that using multiple different visualization layers together with Tableau—meaning, both custom-built and from Tableau—leads to…

### 2) Duplicated effort and opportunities for inconsistency

So you want to use Tableau and a separate charting library to build a custom presentation layer? That makes perfect sense when you want to combine the advantages of Tableau’s presentation layers with the flexibility of a custom UI. 

However, the challenge lies in consistently orchestrating data modeling, security, and caching across all of your presentation layers. 

__By connecting multiple presentation layers to your data warehouse, you’ll need to individually orchestrate your data models and access controls so they’re uniformly defined__. That’s a lot of duplicated effort—which opens the door to gaps and errors. 

### 3) Weaker analytics performance

Lastly, powering embedded analytics with Tableau without a BI layer between Tableau and the data warehouse can cause latency in your user-facing visualizations and dashboards.

Latency is a true user adoption killer: a Google study showed that [bounce likelihood increased by 32%](https://www.thinkwithgoogle.com/marketing-strategies/app-and-mobile/mobile-page-speed-new-industry-benchmarks/) when a page’s load time increased from one second to three, and by *90%* when page load time increased from one to five seconds. So, performance is essential.

__In a stack in which Tableau’s presentation layer sits directly on top of your data source, your users request data from the data source for every query__. At best, __this is redundant and costly__, as multiple users may be requesting the same information. 

At worst, however, building a stack like this __can result in latency and lower performance__. Request volume across users is unpredictable; you can’t control how many people simultaneously request data or consume visualizations. And so, if you have multiple presentation layers, each with duplicate data modeling, security, and caching layers, each making separate and redundant requests directly of the data source—that opens the door to latency.

Latency can be a problem even if you only use Tableau (don’t worry, we happen to have [a fix](https://cube.dev/cloud)). But, with multiple presentation layers, the chance of uneven performance across them is much higher. 

## The best of both worlds: embedded analytics with Tableau and Cube

Alright—let’s get to the solution. 

Tableau is a fantastic tool (in fact, here’s [how to use Tableau with Cube](https://cube.dev/blog/tableau-tutorial).) Combining it with custom presentation layers is a great way to get both efficient, out-of-the-box visualizations and user-centric UI for your embedded analytics.

We’ve previously discussed the [modern data stack for embedded analytics](https://cube.dev/blog/modern-embedded-analytics)—but what is embedded analytics? Let’s take a step back and review this popular category of data application.

## Embedded Analytics Definition
[Embedded analytics](https://cube.dev/use-cases/embedded-analytics) is the integration of data analytics and visualization capabilities within a user’s natural workflow—within internal tooling, web portals, and products like apps. 

Such an integration enables users to conduct analytics directly inside the applications they use rather than having to switch between various applications to get insights.

Let’s illustrate with an example: a seller on an e-commerce platform, “TrapezoidSpace,” would like insights about their revenue.

Without embedded analytics on the e-commerce platform, the seller would have to manually request a sales report from the e-commerce platform, import it into secondary analytics software, then work with the data to get the necessary insights. 

However, with [embedded dashboards](https://cube.dev/case-studies/customizable-embedded-dashboards-and-natural-language-ai-queries), they could get the insights they need with real-time visualizations presented to them directly within the e-commerce platform.

## Embedded Analytics Use Cases
There are many use cases for embedded analytics. We can divide them by the end users and the types of information they present.

### External vs. Internal Embedded Analytics
Embedded analytics can be internal-facing—meaning the end user is within an organization—or external-facing, meaning the end user is an organization’s customer.

Take our previous example of TrapezoidSpace: here, the seller is an external end-user of the platform’s embedded analytics features.

In contrast, let’s take the example of TrapezoidSpace’s customer success manager. They track the time-to-resolution of tickets (TTR) using a bespoke ticket management system that visualizes trends in TTR. That would be an example of internal-facing embedded analytics.

### Types of Embedded Analytics
People use embedded analytics in many ways, but real-time reports and dashboards are the most common.

__Real-time static and interactive reports__ are tabular views of information with the ability to refine data by setting parameters and scheduling. In contrast, __dashboards and data visualizations__ are charts and graphs that present and visualize metrics to make finding insights and trends easier.

## Embedded Analytics Benefits

### Generally, embedded analytics contributes to a user-centric UX that adds value and drives adoption.

Whether users are external or internal, the point of an investment in any tooling is to bring value and thereby drive the tool’s adoption. And, providing a user-centric design and seamless UX tailored to the target user is one of the only ways to get people to (willingly) use products.

So, conveniently locating BI and analytics functionality within the user’s workflow significantly enhances a product’s UX. Improved UX promotes the more effective use of the tool, creates greater value, and increases the tool’s adoption.

### Externally, embedded analytics increases revenue and competitive advantage.

In a survey of project managers, developers, and executives, [96% reported that embedded analytics contributes to revenue growth](https://c6abb8db-514c-4f5b-b5a1-fc710f1e464e.filesusr.com/ugd/e5361a_76709448ddc6490981f0cbea42d51508.pdf). They credited this to better UX and their ability to add revenue streams based on highly sought-after functionalities.

Adding high-value capabilities to products allowed businesses to introduce tiered or subscription-based analytics services—opening the door to acquiring new customers and upselling to recurring ones.

### Internally, embedded analytics increases productivity and the accessibility of data-driven decision-making.

The efficiency with which users can conduct analysis with embedded analytics significantly boosts time effectiveness (and, therefore, cost-effectiveness). With auto-generated dashboards and filtering capabilities, users can draw insights faster and avoid the cumbersome processes of manually pulling data and conducting analysis in separate applications.

Easy access to analytics also allows those with less experience in data analysis to make data-driven decisions. In a 2022 survey, [92% of companies cited their biggest obstacle in becoming ‘data-driven’](https://www.techtarget.com/searchdatamanagement/feature/Improve-data-value-by-relying-on-economic-principles) as people, processes, and change management. However, a custom-built internal embedded analytics platform—one that is tailored to the team’s workflow—doesn’t require complex training in generic BI tools. 

Rather than having to facilitate learning of generic BI tools which aren’t set in its work’s context, an organization can create tools that are already infused with the working context. And so, instrumenting intuitively tailored tools powered by embedded analytics removes training bottlenecks and dependencies—increasing productivity and value-add. 

## Embedded Analytics vs. Business Intelligence
The difference between embedded analytics and traditional business intelligence is simple. While traditional BI means you conduct your analytics in a separate set of tools, embedded analytics allows users to access insights in-app. Their data visualizations, dashboards, and reports live in the application in which they conduct operations, allowing for real-time refreshes and faster learning.

This contrast may seem somewhat minute, but it actually saves employees a lot of time—up to [5 hours](https://netstorage.ringcentral.com/documents/connected_workplace.pdf) a week. These savings increase productivity, allow for constantly updated information, and streamline the entire analytics workflow.
